BOROUGH OF SWISSVALE
Swissvale is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, nine miles east of downtown Pittsburgh. George Westinghouse, the President of Westinghouse Air Brake Company, erected Union Swtich and Signal in Swissvale and maintained the facility, which provided employment for residents.
Swissvale is named after John Swisshelm (1752 - 1838), who owned a farm where the borough is now located. John Swisshelm served under General George Washington in the Revolutionary War and fought at Valley Forge. He married Mary Elizabeth Miller, with whom he had many children. Their son, James Swisshelm, married Jane Grey Cannon, noted abolitionist and political activist. The village of Swisshelm Park is named after Jane Grey Cannon Swisshelm.
During the Industrial age, Swissvale was the site of the Union Switch and Signal Company. According to the 2000 census, Swissvale's population is 9, 653. In 1940, a total of 15, 919 people were living in the borough.
